Sealy High School Dual Credit Information

Students classified as juniors or seniors may be granted credit for college course(s) taken in approved institutions to fulfill units for high school graduation under the following provisions:

  1. The student makes written request to the principal and Superintendent that credit be given for a college course.  The course(s) may be taken concurrently with high school courses or during the summer or evening.
  2. The parent(s) or guardian(s) affirms in writing to the principal and Superintendent that the student has parental permission to take the college course(s).
  3. Credit for successfully completed college course(s) shall be earned in one-half unit increments.
  4. The student pays all costs associated with taking the college course(s) and provides the District with an official college transcript showing the grade received.  The grade must be a minimum of “C” to qualify for high school credit.

All courses become a permanent part of your college transcript.  If you are not THEA exempt, you must take the THEA test.  THEA scores must be presented to the Counselors’ Office by August 1.  Unless you are THEA exempt, you will be signed up for a regular or honors course until your THEA scores are received in the Counselors’ Office.  Upon receipt of your THEA scores, you will be switched to the dual credit course if you choose.  If you score higher than 230 on the reading portion of the THEA you can take government and history courses.  If you score higher than 230 on the writing portion of the THEA test you are eligible to take the English classes.

For the purpose of computing class rank only, students will receive 13 points for each dual credit course.

DUAL/CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT – THEA WARNING
All students must take the THEA test (formerly the TASP test) or be exempted from the test BEFORE taking any college-level course, including dual-credit courses.  Students may be exempted from the THEA test by making the following qualifying scores on the TAKS, SAT, or ACT:

  • SAT – (taken after 4/95) combined critical reading/math score of 1070 with a minimum of 500 on both the critical reading and mathematics tests;
  • ACT – composite of 23 with a minimum of 19 on both the English and mathematics tests; or
  • TAKS – 2200 on the English/Language Arts portion with a writing sub-score of 3 of the Grade 11 Exit Level and 2200 on the Math portion of the Grade 11 Exit Level for Intermediate Algebra/2400 on the math portion of the Grade 11 Exit Level for College Algebra.

DUAL CREDIT COURSES WARNING
Students are responsible for checking and ensuring that the college they are planning to attend will accept transfer credits.

At any time during the first two weeks of the first semester, a student may exit a dual credit course in which he/she is enrolled and move to another course of the same type (e.g., exit U.S. History Dual Credit and enroll in U. S. History), provided there is space available in the desired course along with teacher conference, parent permission, and administrator approval.  The student will be responsible for making up all missed work.

At the end of the first semester, a student may exit a dual credit course in which he/she is enrolled and move to another course.

 After the first two weeks of each semester, no schedule changes will be made, and the student must remain in the dual credit course in which he/she is enrolled until the end of the semester.
