Who must take the THEA?  Any full-time or part-time student in a public community college or university in Texas who has not earned at least three semester hours prior to fall 1989 must take the THEA test.  PLEASE NOTE that the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has approved exemption from THEA for those students who score:  (1) ACT composite score of 23 or higher with English and math part scores equal to or greater than 19; (2) SAT Combined scores of 1070 or higher with verbal and math part scores equal to or greater than 500:  (3) TAAS scale scores of TLI X-86 or higher in math, TLI X-89 or higher in reading, and 1770 or higher in writing.  ACT and SAT scores may be no more than five years old, and EXIT-level TAAS scores may be no more than three years old.  The exemption scores must be achieved at a single administration of the ACT or SAT or the first attempt of the TAAS.  Separate scores from different tests or separate scores from different administrations of the same test cannot be combined to qualify for an exemption.  The exemption policy does not apply if you are going into an educator preparation program.

When must students take the THEA?  Students must take the test prior to enrolling in any college coursework.  This is a change in policy.  If you do not fall under one of the exemptions described above, it is essential that you take the THEA test, preferably during your senior year and no later than June following your graduation.
